The premise
Between published evidence and the indication written on a prescription there is a distance that is almost never discussed in public. This talk is about that distance: why it exists, how it shows up in the consulting room, and what can be done about it with judgement and without cynicism.
It is not a talk about products or brands. It is a talk about how a clinical decision gets made when the guideline falls short, the patient does not match the trial population and the consultation lasts fifteen minutes.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish efficacy demonstrated in a trial from effectiveness expected in practice.
- Identify when a study population does not represent the patient in front of you.
- Read a composite endpoint without overestimating the benefit.
- Interpret effect size, number needed to treat, and absolute versus relative risk.
- Recognise the most frequent biases in promotional literature.
- Communicate uncertainty to the patient without losing credibility.
- Integrate practice guidelines, local evidence and clinical judgement in one decision.
- Build a personal, sustainable approach to staying current.
